A high-speed police chase that ended with a crash has closed a major Westchester County roadway in two towns and injured a police officer, according to the Westchester County Police.
The chase began around 11:30 a.m. Friday when a Westchester County Police officer received a notice that a car passing him on the Sawmill River Road in Mount Pleasant was wanted for a number of vehicle burglaries in Bethlehem, near Albany, said Kieran O'Leary, spokesman for the Westchester County Police.
The officer stopped the vehicle, which then sped away with two people inside, he said.
The chase headed onto Route 117 and then back onto southbound 9A with several other officers joining the chase.
At Dana Road, near the Home Depot, two police cars and the suspect car sped through the intersection, but a third police vehicle was hit by another vehicle that was turning left into the Home Depot, O'Leary said.
The officer's car hit the vehicle that turned in front of him and then hit the guardrail before ending up back on 9A. He was injured during the crash and is being treated at Phelps Hospital, O'Leary said. The other driver was treated and released.
At the same time the other two officers continued chasing the suspect vehicle into the Bronx where officers backed off when traffic became too heavy, making it too dangerous for chase conditions, he said.
The passenger in the suspect vehicle bailed out of the car at West 230th St., in the Bronx. The driver sped off and was lost in traffic.
NYPD and State Police assisted in the search.
Currently, motorists are asked to avoid the area of Dana Road in Hawthorne to Route 100C in Greenburgh due to road closures associated with the police investigation into the crash.
O'Leary said the roadway would be closed for at least the next two to three hours and that traffic is backed up and congested throughout the area.
